Inatasan ng isang US jury ang Meta na magbayad ng $174.5 million para sa paglabag sa live-streaming patents na dinivelop ng isang US Army veteran, na nagnanais na ayusin ang mga kakulangan sa battlefield communications.

Ang paglilitis sa Texas federal court ay natapos sa desisyon ng jurors na ang “live” features sa Facebook at Instagram ay gumamit ng teknolohiyang patented ng Voxer, isang kompanya na co-founded ni Tom Katis, batay sa mga dokumento.

Sinabi ng tagapagsalita ng kompanya, “We believe the evidence at trial demonstrated that Meta did not infringe Voxer’s patents. We intend to seek further relief, including filing an appeal.”

Si Katis ay muling umanib sa army pagkatapos ng September 11, 2001 attacks sa Estados Unidos at nagsilbi bilang isang Special Forces communications sergeant sa Afghanistan, ayon sa court filings.

Nakasaad sa complaint na nang tambangan ang kaniyang combat unit sa Kunar province, naramdaman niya na ang sistema para sa coordinating reinforcements, medical evacuations at marami pang iba ay “hindi angkop para sa time-sensitive communications sa maraming grupo sa isang highly disruptive environment.”

Ayon sa kaniyang mga abogado, “Mr. Katis and his team began developing communications solutions in 2006 to remedy these shortcomings. The new technologies enabled transmission of voice and video communications with the immediacy of live communication and the reliability and convenience of messaging.”

Ayon pa sa mga legal na dokumento, lumapit ang Facebook sa San Francisco-based Voxer tungkol sa potensiyal na kolaborasyon matapos nitong ilunsad ang isang Walkie Talkie app noong 2011, ngunit walang nabuong kasunduan.

Sa halip, ayon sa lawsuit, itinuloy ng Facebook ang paglulunsad ng Facebook Live at Instagram Live, kung saan inilakip nito ang Voxer technology sa features.
