Hit manga series na ‘One Piece’ nagdiriwang ng kaniyang 25th birthday

Isang manga series tungkol sa isang treasure-hunting pirate na nakabighani na ng milyun-milyong tagahanga sa buong mundo, ay nagdiriwang ng ika-25 kaarawan, habang ibinunyag na ng huling kabanata ng best-selling saga ang mga sikreto nito.

Ang huling instalment ng “One Piece” ay nagsimula kahapon, July 25 sa Japanese weekly manga magazine na Shonen Jump, na inilathala ng Shueisha, kasunod ng isang buwang paghinto sa publikasyon.

Ang serye ay nagkaroon ng higit sa 100 volumes at bumasag ng sales records simula nang lumabas ang unang installment nito noong 1997.

Ang kuwento ay umiikot sa hero na si Luffy, na kasama ng iba pang mga pirata ay hinahanap ang pinagnanasaan ng marami na “One Piece” treasure.

Ang 47-anyos na may-akda ng serye na si Eiichiro Oda, ay napagkalooban na ng isang Guinness World Record para sa “most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author,” matapos makapag-produce ng 490 milyong kopya.

Ang kaniyang tagumpay ang sanhi para maging isang global event ang 25th birthday ng kaniyang likha, mula Estados Unidos hanggang sa Pransiya, ang ikalawang pinakamalaking market para sa manga at Japanese animation.

Ang ika-100 volume ng serye ay lumabas sa France noong isang taon na may 250,000 kopya, at nagwagi ng prestihiyosong Prix Goncourt literature prize.

Ayon kay Oda . . . “I’m going to start showing all the secrets of this world that I’ve kept hidden. “It will be fun. Please fasten your seatbelt!”

Sinabi ni Chedli Ben Hassine, isang content creator na ang espesyalisasyon ay pop culture . . . “ ‘One Piece’ has become ‘not only one of the greatest manga series to the world,’ but one of the greatest cultural works, all sectors included.”

Wika naman ni Ryuji Kochi, pangulo para sa Europe, Middle East at Africa sa Toei Animation, ang Japanese company na nag-produce ng serye mula 1999 . . . “What makes this manga so special is above all the plot.”

Ang “One Piece” universe ay kinabibilangan ng cultural at geographical references na nagbibigay dito ng isang universal dimension, gaya ng Ancient Egypt, Venice at medieval Japan.

Sinabi naman ng head ng manga sa publishing company na Glenat . . . “Engaging characters and modern themes of breakneck industrialisation, racism, slavery and geopolitical intrigues add to the appeal of the series. By proposing totally different universes, the author never bores the reader. You have a fresco, an epic, which lasts an extremely long time and where you can’t say it goes round in circles.”

Bagama’t ang finale ng “One Piece” ay nangako ng maraming twists and turns, ang serye ay hindi pa nakaabot sa mas malawak na audience bukod sa Japanese comic fans gaya ng global hits na “Star Wars” at “Harry Potter.”

Ayon sa economist na si Julien Pillot . . . “Japanese culture is far from matching the influence of Western creations backed by a large market and soft power that a cultural machine like Hollywood can produce on an industrial scale.”

Dahil dito ay umaasa ang producers ng paparating na release ng isang Netflix series na hango mula sa “One Piece” universe, na makatutulong ito para “ma-conquer” ang bagong teritoryo, na dadalhin ang istorya sa mahigit 200 milyong subscribers ng global streaming platforms.

Sinabi pa ni Pillot . . . “Hollywood has historically struggled to adapt manga series to the big screen, including the aesthetic and commercial flop that was the adaptation of “Dragon Ball.” If Netflix managed to create a product of very high quality, which captures the unique spirit of “One Piece,” that would be a good start.”
