‘Harry Potter’ actor na si Michael Gambon, pumanaw na sa edad na 82

Inanunsiyo ng pamilya ng bantog na British-Irish actor na si Michael Gambon, na mas nakilala para sa pagganap sa papel na Albus Dumbledore sa anim sa walong “Harry Potter” films, na namatay na ito sa edad na 82 habang nasa ospital.

Si Gambon ay nagkamit ng apat na parangal sa telebisyon sa British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) at Olivier awards sa ilang dekada niyang acting career sa telebisyon, pelikula, radyo at teatro, na ang lalong tumatak ay ang kaniyang papel bilang headmaster ng Hogwarts wizarding school sa Potter series.

Ayon sa pahayag na inilabas sa ngalan ng kaniyang pamilya ay nakasaad, “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”

Minsang inilarawan ng kapwa acting legend na yumaong si Ralph Richardson bilang “The Great Gambon,” nakakuha ito ng reputasyon bilang isa sa mga nangungunang ilaw ng British theatre habang patuloy ding nagtatamasa ng mga tagumpay kapwa sa maliit at malaking screen.

Isinilang sa Ireland, nagsimula ang acting career ni Gambon sa stage, kung saan una siyang lumabas sa isang produksiyon ng “Othello” sa Gates Theatre sa Dublin noong 1962.

Sinabi ni Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar, “He is a great actor. Whether performing in Beckett, Dennis Potter or Harry Potter, he gave his all to every performance.”

Si Gambon ay naging isang household name sa Britain para sa kaniyang 1986 role bilang Philip Marlow sa “The Singing Detective” ng screenwriter na si Dennis Potter, at noong 1990s ay gumanap siya sa papel ng sikat na French police detective ni George Simenon sa ITV series na “Maigret.”

Nang mga panahon iyon ay isa na siyang established theatre star, matapos lumabas sa “The Norman Conquests” ni Alan Ayckbourn at sa “The Life Of Galileo,” bukod sa iba pang leading stage roles.

Na-nominate rin si Gambon para sa isang Tony award noong 1997 para sa kaniyang bahagi sa “Skylight” ng dramatistang si David Hare.

Nagwari rin siya ng plaudits para sa National Theatre productions ng “Henry IV” ni Nicholas Hytner. Huling lumabas si Gambon sa stage noong 2012 sa isang London production ng “All That Fall” play ni Samuel Beckett.

Samantala, nagkaroon din siya ng hindi malilimutang screen performances sa 2015 adaptation ng BBC ng “The Casual Vacancy” ni JK Rowling, at sa period dramas gaya ng “The King’s Speech,” kung saan ginampanan niya ang papel ni King George V, ama ni King George VI.

Nagkamit siya ng Emmy award nominations para sa kaniyang papel bilang Mr. Woodhouse sa 2010 adaptation ng “Emma” ni Jane Austen, at sa pagganap sa papel ni President Lyndon B. Johnson sa “Path to War” noong 2002.

Subalit ang kaniyang pagganap bilang Dumbledore sa tanyag na “Harry Potter” films ang naging daan upang makilala siya sa buong mundo, matapos niyang palitan si Richard Harris bilang Hogwarts headmaster kasunod ng pagkamatay ni Harris noong 2002.

Si Gambon ay ginawang knight ng yumaong si Queen Elizabeth II noong 1998, para sa kaniyang kontribusyon sa entertainment industry.

Sinabi ng Harry Potter actor na si Daniel Radcliffe, “With the loss of Michael Gambon the world just became considerably less fun. Michael Gambon was one of the most brilliant, effortless actors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with, but despite his immense talent, the thing I will remember most about him is how much fun he had doing his job. He was silly, irreverent and hilarious. He loved his job, but never seemed defined by it.”

Pinuri rin si Gambon ni Emma Watson, co-star ni Radcliffe at gumanap bilang Hermione Granger sa serye sa pagsasabing, “he showed us what it looks like to wear greatness lightly. You never took it too seriously, but somehow delivered the most serious moments with all the gravitas.”

Pinuri naman ni Fiona Shaw, na gumanap bilang Petunia Dursley sa Potter films, ang iba’t ibang papel na ginampanan ni Gambon.

Aniya, “He varied his career remarkably, and never judged what he was doing, he just played. With text, there was nothing like him. He could do anything, he’s just a brilliant, magnificent trickster.”

Pinuri ng matagal nang kaibigan at aktres na si Eileen Atkins ang abilidad ni Gambon bihagin ang kaniyang stage audiences.

Ayon kay Atkins, “He just had to walk on stage, and he commanded the whole audience immediately.”

Itinuring naman ng dating Top Gear presenter na si Jeremy Clarkson si Gambon bilang isang “tremendous guest” kayat may isang sulok sa racetrack ng naturang BBC show na kaniyang ipinangalan sa aktor.

Sinabi ni Clarkson, “He was hugely amusing.”
