Yuka Saso ng Pilipinas, nanguna sa US Women’s Open

SAN FRANCISCO, United States (AFP) – Six birdies sa isang four-under par 67 ang pinakawalan ng Philippine teenager na si Yuka Saso, para makuha ang isang one-shot lead sa dating kampeon na si Lee Jeong-eun, sa halfway stage ng US Women’s Open.

Ang 19 anyos at two-time winner sa Japan LPGA tour, ay nakapagpasok ng isang long birdie putt sa kaniyang final hole, ang par-three eighth sa Lake Course sa Olympic Club, para makatapos ng 36 holes sa six-under par 136.

Si Saso ay naglalaro sa kaniya pa lamang ika-3 major game, at nakagawa ng two-shot lead sa 36 holes sa Lotte Championship noong Abril.

Ayon kay Saso . . . “Stay patient and enjoy is the lesson I’ll take into the weekend. I hit good shots from the rough today and holed a couple putts.”

Tiwala si Saso na magiging malakas ang kaniyang performance sa challenging par-71 layout na nag-host na ng limang men’s US Opens pero ni minsan ay hindi pa nag-host ng women’s major.

Sinabi pa ni Saso . . . “The key to hitting out of the dense rough at Olympic was to not try to do too much. First, if I go in the rough, my mindset is just to go for the fairway, I mean, it’s really long and like, sticky, so yeah, it’s really hard to get on (the green) from it. I’m glad that I’m a little bit good out of it.”
