Sinabi ng foreign ministry na ibinalik na ng Peru sa Italian embassy sa Lima, ang isang koleksiyon ng 73 Roman coins na ang ilan ay nagmula pa sa ikalawa at ika-apat na siglo.

Ang mga barya ay nasamsam mula sa isang babaeng taga Peru noong 2021 sa international airport sa Cusco, isang tourist hub at gateway sa kilala sa buong mundo na Macchu Picchu Inca citadel.

Sinabi ng deputy foreign minister ng Peru na si Ignacio Higueras, “The collection of 73 coins are part of Italian heritage. The valuable collection is made up of 42 coins from the imperial Roman era of the second and fourth centuries. The other coins were from the medieval, Renaissance and Byzantine periods in Italy, comprising a collection with more than 1,000 years of history.”

Ilan sa silver coins ay ipinakita sa mga mamamahayg, na ang iba ay may mukha ng isang Roman citizen, ang iba naman ay mga letra lamang.

Ayon kay Italian colonel Lanfranco D’sibio, “The coins were seized from a Peruvian woman who had arrived at the Cusco airport from Italy. The coins have great historical and cultural value.”

Pinuri rin ni D’sibio ang international cooperation sa paglaban sa “illicit trafficking” ng mga cultural asset.

Sinabi naman ni Giancarlo Maria Curcio, ambassador ng Italy sa Peru, “Thanks to the collaboration between Peru and Italy, these 73 coins will return home.”
