Inihayag ng isang senior government minister na hindi tututulan ng Australia ang extradition sa Estados Unidos ng founder ng Wikileaks na si Julian Assange, at may tiwala sila sa British judicial system.

Isang formal order ang inilabas ng isang British court nitong Miyerkoles para sa extradition ng Australian national na si Assange sa Estados Unidos, kung saan haharap siya sa paglilitis para sa paglalathala ng mahahalagang secret files na may kaugnayan sa giyera sa Iraq at Afghanistan.

Kung mahahatulan, maaari siyang makulong ng hanggang 175 taon sa bilangguan.

Ayon kay Australian Senator at finance minister Simon Birmingham . . . “We have confidence in the independence and integrity of the British justice system. Australia’s government was not arguing against the extradition. This is a process that will be able to continue to work through that system.”

Bilang pagsunod sa atas ng korte ng Britanya, ang mga abogado ni Assange ay mayroong hanggang Mayo 18 para magsumite sa interior minister ng Britain na si Priti Patel, kung saan nakasalalay ang huling desisyon tungkol sa kanyang extradition.

Samantala, isang koalisyon ng 25 pangkat ng human rights group — kabilang ang American Civil Liberties Union, Human Rights Watch at Reporters Without Borders – ang tumutol sa extradition ni Assange na nagsasabing ito ay nagdudulot ng isang “malaking banta sa kalayaan sa pamamahayag kapwa sa Estados Unidos at sa ibang bansa.”

Higit isang dekada nang iniiwasan ni Assange na siya ay ma-extradite, at nangubli rin ito sa Ecuadorian embassy sa London noong 2012 upang maiwasan ang extradition naman sa Sweden dahil sa sexual assault charges.

Siya ay nakakulong sa high-security Belmarsh prison ng London mula pa noong 2019 para sa hindi pagbabayad ng piyansa sa Swedish charges, na ibinaba na noong 2020.
